First, invest in free weights. 5 lb weights would be a good start.
1) start with weights, and start with a low weight – 5 lb weights are a good start. Do 3 sets of 15-20 reps on each exercise. I suggest looking up various exercises to target the muscles you want to tone in your upper body.
I suggest arm curls for starters. Make sure you do each lift slowly and thoroughly; by the time you’re finished, you should feel a burn.
Also, for the chest and shoulders, hold two weights at chest height, start with your arms stretched outwards with the weights and bring them in towards your chest and back out.
I also recommend something called ‘planking’; lay face-down on the ground, prop yourself up on your elbows, keeping your legs straight, lift yourself up onto your elbows and toes. Do not bend your back. Keep your stomach muscles tense; hold it for 30 seconds and then relax. Do it 4 times – it should be very difficult to do, and it’s fantastic for your arms, shoulders, back, legs, and hips.
2) do leg exercises; the thigh muscle is the biggest in the human body, and if you build it, it will improve your ability to run, it will improve your stamina, it will make you burn more calories, and it will improve your posture.
I recommend something called frog squats because they’re the most effective for women. Stand with your legs shoulder width apart, bend at the waist and point your butt in the air, and slowly lower your butt down until it’s on level with your knees, and slowly lift your butt all the way back up. Keep your waist bent the entire time. Do as many as you can, until your thighs burn and you can’t do any more of them. Then do ten more.
Also do lunges while holding your weights, and keep your back straight to avoid injury. Do them slowly for the most benefit, anywhere from 20-40 on each leg.
Another good exercise is to stand with your back against a bare wall, and slowly slide yourself down the wall, bending only at the knees, until your behind is level with your knees, like you’re sitting on an invisible chair. Hold the position for 10 seconds, and go back up – do this twenty times, or until failure. This is excellent for the thighs and butt.
3) Sit ups and crunches, but make sure to do them correctly, or they won’t help. Lay on the floor with your knees bent, place your fingers at your temples with your elbows pointed out; do not allow your back to touch the ground while doing sit ups. Keeping your back lifted at least an inch from the ground, rise slowly, keeping pressure on your stomach muscles at all times – at no point should it feel easy, the tension should not go away. Rise about five inches, and slowly go back down.
Also do russian twists; again, don’t let your back touch the ground – when you put your back on the ground, it takes the strain off your stomach muscles and makes the sit ups less effective. In your usual position, rise slowly, and direct your left elbow towards your right knee, go back down, and then direct your right elbow towards your left knee. These are great for the strap of muscle that crosses over your side and into your hips.
4) do bursts of intense cardio; I suggest also investing in a cardio machine – treadmill, exercise bike, step machine. Or, if your ceiling is high enough, a skipping rope. Doing bursts of intense cardio has been shown to be more effective in building muscle.
Also don’t neglect your diet; its the fuel for your body, treat your body right. Drink lots of water.

There’s plenty. Aslong as you have a mat or something you can do sit ups, push ups and many other exercises just watching the telly! You could even get yourself a fitness DVD (celebrities seem to have alot out this time of year)

What are some ways to exercise indoors?
I don’t like going outside in winter to exercise. Way too cold, but I don’t know of ways to exercise indoors. And please, don’t say dancing! I hate dancing! I can’t dance! It’s embarrassing!
Well, I don’t have a mat. Can I use something else?
